Tech Webinar: The judgement is in – Business Interruption Insurance

Date: 11th Feb 9.15am – 10am

This seminar qualifies as 45 minutes CPD and is FREE to members.

The COVID-19 crisis has tested leisure operators’ business interruption insurance to breaking point.

Tensions have erupted between policy-holders and insurers. Many leisure operators have been relying on payouts from these policies – and awaiting the recent judgement from the UK Supreme Court with baited breath.

Our technical webinar will provide members with an in-depth update on the judgement, and what it means for leisure operators and commercial landlords. Craig Thompson, litigation partner from lawyers TLT LLP, will detail the judgement and its legal impact. As an experienced commercial litigator, working in a number of industries across areas such as IT, retail, sports and aviation, Craig has recently published an analysis of the judgement on business interruption insurance, and will be sharing his insight with our members.

This 45 min session will include a Q&A with Craig and Paul Turnbull, Head of Client Services, Real Estate Practice, from  leading UK insurance broker, Willis Towers Watson. Paul has spent 38 years in the insurance industry, many of these devoted to specialising in real estate risks, initially at Aon before joining the newly formed WTW Real Estate Practice in 2005 as an Account Director. During his
career Paul has been responsible for a wide range of UK and European accounts including PLCs, REITs, pension funds, fund managers, sovereign wealth funds, charities and private investors. In addition to having overall responsibility for the delivery of client service he is the
principal referral point for technical issues including the design and delivery of specialist real estate policy wordings and is the WTW representative on the British Property Federations Insurance Committee.

The Q&A will be a chance to discuss the implications of the judgment and to tackle members’ questions.

The event will be chaired by Natasha Southwick, Asset Manager at Newriver REIT plc. Natasha is an experienced surveyor with a demonstrated history of working in the commercial real estate industry and over seven years’ experience within the real estate sector. For the last three years she has specialised in retail leasing across national markets, acting on behalf of institutional landlords providing strategic asset advice, and advising operators on their expansion and portfolio rationalisation. Natasha also sits on The Leisure Property Forum Committee.

This session provides members with thought leadership and insight on an area that affects many in our sector, as well as providing valuable CPD for professional members.
